SU construction update: Work on some campus projects will continue into fall semester

Construction on the University Place promenade will be finished on Aug. 22 — one week before classes for the fall semester start.

The University Place promenade is set to be complete Aug. 22, said Pete Sala, vice president and chief campusfacilities officer, in a campus construction update sent to the Syracuse University community on Monday.

After the concrete foundation for the promenade was poured last week, Sala said in the email that the plinths are currently being completed and the bricks are being set rapidly.

The University Place promenade is a part of the Campus Framework. The university released a 42-page draft of the Campus Framework on June 20, detailing plans for the physical SU campus over the next 20 years.

In addition, the construction in the area around the Quad 2 Parking Lot — which is part of the University Place promenade project — is now complete. The final construction effort for the promenade will focus on the two ends at South Crouse Avenue and College Place.

The university also has a live feed to show the progress being made on the University Place promenade.



Over the summer, SU is working on completing more than 120 campus construction projects. Here are the projects that have already been completed or will be completed in the next two weeks, according to Sala’s email:

Brewster/Boland/Brockway Complex: The installation of new carpet in the corridors and lounge areas of Brewster, Boland and Brockway halls has been completed.

Carnegie Library: Renovations to the library staff areas, including a conference room and single-occupant accessible restroom, will be completed this month.

Crouse College bells: Preparatory work will take place this week in anticipation of a crane being onsite on Aug. 17 and 18 to install the four new bells in the Crouse College Bell Tower. The bell installation will wrap up during the last week of August.

Haven, Flint and DellPlain halls: The major renovation work in these three residence halls is almost done. Sala said in the email that he is pleased by how much work was accomplished in a short period of time. Fire alarm testing and certification is wrapping up; tile is being installed in the new bathrooms; and new flooring and paint will complete the look in these residence halls. Final certificates of completion from the city are also anticipated this week.

Heroy Suite 333: Furniture is being moved into Heroy Geology Building Suite 333, which is a new space created for the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Program.

Washington Arms: The interior renovations of the first floor of Washington Arms are now complete, slightly ahead of schedule. The newly configured space created three additional rooms and a student study lounge. One of the three new rooms is fully accessible, with an accessible bathroom. The exterior stairway improvements and landscaping are still ongoing and will be complete during the week of Aug. 15.

Some of the campus construction work will continue into the fall semester, including the following, according to Sala’s email:

Center for Science and Technology siding replacement: The siding replacement at the Center for Science and Technology will continue into the fall with limited impact on the campus community.

Crouse College masonry and sloped glazing repair: Masonry improvements are continuing at Crouse College, with some work expected to last into the fall. But obtaining new glass material best matched to the antique glass of the sloped glazing skylight has been “a bit tricky,” Sala said in the email. If the university cannot find the right product, it will make the skylight presentable and weather-tight until the appropriate solution to maintain the historic character of the building is found.

Link Hall accessible ramp and auditorium improvements: The construction of the new ramped entry is underway. The new accessible auditorium entry has been cut through, and construction on the new lobby will start soon. These improvements will be complete in the fall semester.

Sims Hall exterior stairs: Site restoration of the north side of Sims Hall will be complete next week. Foundations and stair bases on the east side are complete with site restoration to follow. Granite treads will be installed on these heated stairs over the course of the fall semester. No more than one entry will be closed at any given time.

Schine Student Center glass door replacement: New doors to replace all the glass doors at the Schine Student Center will arrive within the next two weeks. These doors will be installed one at a time, with particular scheduling sensitivity being paid to the main entry doors. This project will also add scheduled locking and card access on all doors of the building — a feature that is installed on almost all other SU facilities. In addition, half of the brick leading to the south entry of Schine will be replaced as part of the University Place promenade project, and the other half will be replaced at the time the doors are replaced.

900 E. Genesee St. painting and window replacement: Work on exterior siding and painting at Phoebe’s Restaurant & Coffee Lounge — located at 900 E. Genesee St. in Syracuse — will continue into September. Second-floor window replacements at a number of SU locations on East Genesee Street will take place as well.

The final summer construction information session will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Lyman Auditorium.

After receiving positive feedback from these information sessions, SU has decided to continue holding them during the fall semester. The first two meetings are scheduled for Aug. 23 and Sept. 22.
