Man dies after being shot in chest, crashing car into police near Comstock Avenue

A man has died following a gunshot wound to the chest that was discovered after the man crashed his car into a Syracuse police officer’s, police said.
Around 2:38 a.m. Sunday, Syracuse police were responding to a shots fired incident on the 100 block of Smith Lane when near the intersection of E. Colvin Street and Robert Drive – about two blocks away from Comstock Avenue near the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center – an officer’s patrol car was hit from behind by another vehicle, according to a Syracuse Police Department release.
The police officer checked on the other driver, identified as Devante Combs, 22, of Syracuse, and determined the driver had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Combs was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he later died, according to the release.
Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide, according to the release, and no suspect information is currently available.
