Syracuse field hockey remained at No. 12 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Week 7 Poll, which was released Tuesday. The Orange narrowly lost 3-2 to No. 4 Virginia in their only game of the week.
On Friday against the Cavaliers, the Orange struck first, with Berber Bakermans giving SU a 1-0 lead with just four minutes remaining in the half. After Virginia’s Emma Watchilla equalized the match in the third quarter, Bo van Kempen regained the lead for Syracuse on its first penalty corner. With four minutes remaining in regulation, Virginia’s Jans Croon scored on a penalty corner of her own, sending the match into overtime with the teams tied at 2-2.
Following an overtime period where neither team found the back of the net, the Orange entered their second penalty shootout of the season. After Bakermans missed a penalty shot that would’ve put SU ahead, Mia Abello fired her shot past Louise Pert, icing the game for the Cavaliers and defeating Syracuse 4-3 in the shootout.
Despite the loss, SU gained 46 points in the NFHCA Poll. Syracuse’s 465 points this week are its highest mark to this point in 2024. This is the second consecutive week that Syracuse has set a season high in poll points, as its Week 6 figure of 419 was also a season-best at the time.
